SOHRAB KASHEF

Biography

Sohrab Kashef (born 16 March 1982) is an Iranian conductor and composer. In addition to having served as a conductor in several orchestras in Europe where he studied music and currently lives, Kashef has conducted a vast spectrum of professional and youth orchestras across the globe from Asia to America. He is currently the chief conductor of the Garousman Symphonic Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor of Iranian National Orchestra and guest conductor of Tehran Symphonic Orchestra. Kashef is recognized for his elegant technique, thorough command of complex scores, effective communication, and unique musical interpretation. His sensitive communication and effective work with musicians resulted to an invitation from the Iranian National Orchestra as chief conductor for 2023

Studies

Born in a musical family in Tehran, Kashef started his first music lessons at the age of four. Later he studied piano performance and composition in Tehran Art University. He moved to Vienna in 2006 to join Georg Mark’s conducting class in Konservatorium Wien University. Kashef completed his Bachelor program in 2010 and obtained a Master’s degree with distinction in conducting in 2012.

Prizes

In 2010, Kashef won the Second prize at the „Con Brio“international conducting competition in Austria. In 2013 he was one of the 10 finalists at the 53rd International Competition for Young Conductors Besançon.

In 2021, he recieved the highest honorary degree of art and culture ministry of Iran because of his effective work with the iranian major orchestras.

Despite of his young age in 1998 he won first prize for theater music in Fadjr festival as youngest participant. In 2002 he won second prize for composition in Tehran Art University festival and 2004 first prize in composition Concour_Sarasari in Tehran.

Teaching Activities

2012-2013 he was teacher at Konservatorium Wien Privat Universität. Since 2014 he works with young musicians as guest teacher of Tehran Art University. Since 2016 he is Lecturer of Fine Arts Faculty of Tehran University.

Experiences

As a child prodigy in music, Kashef started his music career at very young age. He composed his first music for documentary Films. At the age of 16 he had 12 compositions for theater music. Growing up, he enjoyed Iranian traditional music, recording film music, and played in several Ensembles in order to enrich his musical experiments and possibilities.

2006 – 2014 he conducted many concerts of both opera and symphonic repertoire, such as Baden sinfonietta orchestra in Musikverein Vienna.

Since 2014 he conducted regularly Iranian youth orchestras such as Alborz symphonic orchestra and Tehran conservatory symphonic orchestra and the iranian major orchestras.

2014 Kashef first guest-conducted the Radio and Television Symphonic Orchestra (IRIB) in Tehran, and returned in the same season for a second guest-conducting appearance. In 2015 IRIB Symphonic Orchestra invited Sohrab Kashef as its next music director effective with the same season, which he continued working successfully with this orchestra for 4 years.

In January 2016 he made his successful conducting debut with Iranian National Orchestra and in May 2017 his Debut with Tehran Symphonic orchestra.
Kashef stood down as music director of the IRIB Symphonic Orchestra in 2019. He was invited as principal guest conductor of Iranian National Orchestra. He also simultaneously founded and conducted Garousman youth Symphonic Orchestra.
